Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest estuarine water lagoon covers an area of 1100 sq Km with combination of salt and fresh water. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow sandy ridge, called Ramsar Wetland. For it biodiversity, this lake attracts millions migratory bird in winter. Parts of the lake, such as Mangalajodi and Nalabana receive millions of migratory birds altering the lake into a paradise for bird lovers. Chilika is also a major attraction being home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Another attraction of this place is Kalijai Temple, is located on an island in Chilika Lake. The name of this temple becomes Kalijai because of Maa Kali and Maa Jaai. This temple was built by Sri Jagannath Mansingh, king of Bankad (Banapur) in the year 1717.
